CARDBOARD BOAT RACE

ONLINE REGISTRATION

CHALLENGE:

Design and build a human-powered corrugated cardboard boat capable of racing a 200-yard course up to three (3) times.

SCHEDULE:

Saturday, July 25

12:00 PM: Line-ups/Registration begins
1:15 PM: Captain’s meeting
1:30 PM: Races begin

RACE DETAILS:

Buoy Class: 10—15 years old • Pair (2-person team) • Crew (3—8 person team)
Cutter Class: 16yrs—adult • Pair (2-person team) • Crew (3—8 person team)
(children under 10yrs may be accompanied by adults in Cutter Class only, see below for details)

RULES

BOAT CONSTRUCTION
1. Entire hull, superstructure and seating must be made entirely out of cardboard. No surfboard or paddleboard style allowed.
2. Only corrugated cardboard is allowed.
3. Absolutely no use of the following items will be permitted: tar-based substances, fiberglass resin, carpet tubes or barrels, epoxy glue, two-part varnish or any other two-part substance
4. It may be waterproofed, but no use of the above items. The hull must not be wrapped in plastic, duct tapes, shrink wrap or any thing else.
5. Only seams and joints may be taped or glued (waterproofing), but not the whole boat.
6. Use of canoe paddles, oars or kayak paddles are allowed.
7. Boat must be free of sharp objects, pointy objects or anything else that could cause injuries to other boaters.
8. Boat passenger area must not be permanently enclosed above the occupants shoulders (as a precaution in the event of a tip- over).
9. All boats are subject to an inspection for compliance of the rules. A boat must pass inspection to be eligible to race. You will have the opportunity to fix a violation and be re-inspected. All boats must be approved prior to the captain meeting at 1:15pm.

RACE
1. The boat captain must register before the race AND attend the pre-race captain’s meeting.
2. Boat occupants must wear a properly fastened Coast Guard approved life jacket while in the boat or water.
3. No more than eight (8) crew or passengers allowed in any boat.
4. Cutter Class only: children under 8 yrs of age may be onboard, but must be accompanied by one adult per child.
5. All crew must be IN the boat when crossing the finish line to qualify as a finisher in your heat.
6. Boats with the fastest times in the preliminary heats advance to the semi-finals and then on to the finals (3 races total).

TEAM WAIVER AND RELEASE OF LIABILITY
THIS DOCUMENT IS IMPORTANT, SHOULD BE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY AND SIGNED BY EACH PARTICIPANT.

In consideration of participating in the Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival Cardboard Boat Race, I represent that I understand the nature of the Cardboard Boat Race events and that I and/or my minor child am qualified, in good health, and in proper physical condition to participate in such Activity.
I acknowledge that if I and/or my minor child believe event conditions are unsafe, I and/or my minor child will immediately discontinue participa- tion in the Activity. I fully understand that Cardboard Boat Race events involve risks of serious bodily injury, including permanent disability, paralysis and death, which may be caused by my own actions, or inactions, those of others participating in the event, the conditions in which the event takes place, or the negligence of the "Releasees" named below; and that there may be other risks either known or not known to me or not readily foreseeable at this time; and I fully accept and assume all such risks and all responsibility for losses, costs, and damages I and/or my minor child incur as a result of my and/or my minor child’s participation in the Activity.
 
I hereby release, discharge, and covenant not to sue Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival Inc., the City of Grand Haven, Michigan, its respec- tive administrators, directors, agents, officers, volunteers, and employees, other participants, any sponsors, advertisers, and, if applicable, owners and lessors of premises on which the Activity takes place, (each considered one of the "RELEASEES" herein) from all liability, claims, demands, losses, or damages on my account caused or alleged to be caused in whole or in part by the negligence of the "releases" or other- wise, including negligent rescue operations; and I further agree that if, despite this release, waiver of liability, and assumption of risk I, or any- one on my and/or my minor child's behalf, makes a claim against any of the Releasees, I will indemnify, save, and hold harmless each of the releasees from any loss, liability, damage, or cost which any may incur as the result of such claim.
 
I have read this RELEASE AND WAIVER OF LIABILITY, ASSUMPTION OF RISK, AND INDEMNITY AGREEMENT, AND PARENTAL CONSENT AGREEMENT, understand that I have given up substantial rights by signing it and have signed it freely and without any inducement or assurance of any nature and intend it be a complete and unconditional release of all liability to the greatest extent allowed by law and agree that if any portion of this agreement is held to be invalid the balance, notwithstanding, shall continue in full force and effect.
